Atlanta Falcons: The Atlanta Falcons had a dismal showing in the Wild Card round of the 2011 2012 playoffs. In what was arguably the worst playoff showing in NFL history the Atlanta Falcons lost to the New York Giants 24 2. Atlanta Falcons offense which was compared to the St. Louis Rams "Greatest Show on Turf" of the early 2000's by NFL Legend Warren Sapp during the 2011 preseason on NFL network. Warren Sapp quoted the Atlanta Falcons as the "Greatest Show on Turf Part II" while sitting next to Marshall Faulk, to his credit the Atlanta Falcons offense looked renewed, refresh and exciting during the 2011 preseason.
What happened to the Falcons offense? Mike "full of" Mularkey the offensive coordinator of the Atlanta Falcons lost touch with the Falcons offensive players. Mike Mularkey's play calling has been more than questionable on several occasions during the 2011 2012 season, the offensive play schemes on 4th Down and 1 or 4th Down and inches has been putrid. Putrid and depressing for Falcons fans to watch a offense with Michael Turner, Roddy White, Tony Gonzalez, Julio Jones and Matt Ryan consistently not get the job done on 4th Down.
The greatest example was watching Michael Turner on the sideline while the Falcons offense called a Matt Ryan QB sneak play on 4th and inches during their Wild Card playoff lost to the New York Giants. Michael Turner watch idly on the sideline during the play not because he was injured, hurt or tired he was on the sidelines because Mike Mularkey had diagramed an offensive play (in the playoffs) on 4th and inches that did not involve the Atlanta Falcons All Pro running back and the stern frustrating look on Michael Turners face spoke volumes.
In a post game interview with future HOF Tony Gonzalez mentioned the Giants defense and the Falcons offense "They did a great job of defending us, especially in the second half," veteran tight end Tony Gonzalez said. "That shouldn't happen to a team like we have. We're a lot better than this."
Yes, the Atlanta Falcons are a lot better than what Mike "full of" Mularkey displayed in the 2011 2012 Wild Card game but the truth is Atlanta Falcons owner Arthur Blank has a few offseason decisions to ponder. Since the year 2000 every NFC South team (except Atlanta Falcons) have won a Super Bowl or made a Super Bowl appearance. Atlanta Falcons defense and offense has become stale "stuck in the rudder". Next season Falcons team leaders Tony Gonzalez and John Abraham 's bodies will be one year older, one more season removed from greatness. The question for the Atlanta Falcons organization is what will happen next? now is the time for the front office to RISE UP! and create key coaching and coordinator personnel decisions and changes.

Cherry Liquor
Cherry Liquor
After years of gabbing about it, we finally decided to learn how to play mah jong. I mean, what is more grandma ish than getting together to play this game? It gained major popularity in the 30s, which is why I was drawn to it. I have to guess that Donovan was drawn to it for its complication and Noel was attracted by the booze that I offered to serve.
This "meeting" was actually a potluck dinner where we grannies did little work, which was a nice change from our normal grandma meetings. The whole excuse for getting together was that the sour cherry liquor I made (from our summer fruit picking excursion) was finally ready to drink and I wanted the grannies to get together for a tasting.
The cherry liquor turned out well, although it is definitely an acquired taste. Noel described it as cough medicine tasting, but not in a bad way. I decanted the liquor minutes before the grannies showed up and I think this was a mistake. I didn give the liquor time to breath and develop a richer flavor. A week after the liquor was in the decanter it gained a sweetness and deeper cherry flavor. It is definitely a nice after dinner drink to have on a cold night. Now I just need to try to make this liquor last until next cherry season, which may be difficult!
After we had a good dinner and a few drinks we decided to teach ourselves mah jong. We were lacking a forth player, but luckily we were able to convince my boyfriend to play with us (I think the big plate of food helped). Donovan got a mah jong set from Ebay that came with some poorly written rules, so she also purchase a "Lets Play Mah Jong" book. We based our game rules between those two sources and some rules found in internet searches.
There are many many different ways to play mah jong. We have stuck to our own little variation of the American game rules. Now, I not going to lie to you mah jong is a complicated game that
makes you go cross eyed when you are first reading all the rules, but
it is worth it. We found it was best to just understand the goal of the game and start playing to learn the rest of it. (We had a cheat sheet that spelled out what you needed to win mah jong, which was helpful for the first few rounds.)We definitely made some mistakes in our first few games
(as evidenced by the photos), but we kept learning little by little and
had so much fun in the process. We will all admit that this game is very addictive. So addictive that I ended up buying my own set to take home for the holidays and proceeded to get my entire family addicted to mah jong. Even my nine year old cousin is addicted to the game, and pretty damn good at it to boot!
All in all, this was a great way to spend a winter night. We are planning on a few more granny game nights where we shall teach ourselves new to us games. Donovan recently got me into Settlers of Catan. Any board/card games you are a fan of or want to suggest to us?
I just moved to Oak Park from Long Beach, CA, where I had a weekly game of Mah Jongg with some fabulous ladies. They sent me off earlier this month with my own mah jongg set to find and spread the the love in my new town. My deep obsession with paper led me to meet Kim yesterday at Paper Source (I pretty sure her name is Kim.), and my excitement over the game and 6th sense for kindred spirits led me to ask her if she plays and to invite her to learn on my new set. She was noncommittal but she did mention your blog and your grannying ways. So here I am.

Best VCR For The MoneyThe VCR is as common as the light bulb in many households these days, but with the advent of Satellite and HDTV, the need for an affordable VCR to record a higher quality image is needed. JVC has answered the call with the HRS 3600U.
As well as being a full featured HIFI Stereo VCR, this unit has the ability to record at SVHS Quality (400lines) on regular VHS tape. Not only that, but with a street price of around $250 ($319.95 MSRP), this unit is quite affordable.
If you need to upgrade your VCR to meet the demands of your Home Theater System, this is one unit to seriously consider. Although all MiniDV camcorders can take digital still photos, the resolution is fairly limited to 640x480.
SONY addresses the issue by introducing the PC 100, the first Megapixel Camcorder. As a result, this unit can not only shoot excellent 500 line video, but can capture a still image (using SONY's Memory Stick Technology) with a resoluion of 1152x864, bringing it in line with many mid range digital still cameras.
Although the price seems a little steep at $1999, its better than having to buy and carry around two separate cameras. This unit is well worth checking out. If you are at all interested in a MiniDV Camcorder, I would give this unit serious consideration.
Best Home Theater Audio ProductHome Theater is becoming very popular these days and the number of households taking advantage of this experience is quite extensive, but not all of us have the budget or the room for a bunch of large speakers and expensive amplifiers to obtain the "true" Home Theater experience.
As a result a whole new audio product category has taken foothold in the marketplace to bring the Home Theater experience to those on a budget The Home Theater In A Box.
As with all electronic products however, there are cheap units that don't perform and expensive units that perform, but may not be a good value. Some offer both modest cost and both good performance and value. In my opinion, the Kenwood HTB 502 fills the bill. This system consists of a fairly powerful Dolby Digital/DTS Receiver and Speakers for around $600. Even though the speakers supplied are not "audiophile" quality, they hold up well in a modest Home Theater setup and thus, provide a good value.

Panasonic to the Rescue! Not only has Panasonic released its own Floppy Disk Digital camera to go head to head with SONY, but has added the capacity to accept the 120MB Superdisk as well, thus enabling the camera to take a large quantity of High Resolution pictures without having to carry a large number of disks.
If you don't have a Superdisk drive in your computer, don't worry, this unit also has USB support. This unit also features both PC and MAC compatability.
Yes, there are better Digital Cameras available in terms of resolution and optics, but since Panasonic was able to take SONY's concept of convenience one step further, they get my vote for the best value in a Digital Still Camera this year.

TAG Hauer LINKTAG Hauer is a premier watch company famous for making some very tough sports analog watches. So why did they started making Android phones? MSRP is. $4700 USD.
For that hefty price tag, you can choose from 3 different kinds of metal covers (titanium, rose gold, or steel), 3 types of cover (alligator, calfskin, or lizard). and an outdated Android phone with merely 256MB of RAM, (probably sub 1GHz CPU) and 5 MP back camera. (In other words, it's like the ORIGINAL Motorola Droid, albeit guzzied up).
Porsche Design P 9530The P 9530 is a design prototype by Andre Silva, NOT a real phone. However, Porsche Design have marketed two phones before, and there's little reason they can't build this one.
This one features aluminum uni body (single piece) and VERY sleek yet industrial tough design. The prototype spec says 3D camera, but I doubt if they build it it'll actually have that. Still, a very interesting design, if a bit on the plain side. Fujitsu is making one as well, but this is a really weird part. It feature two separate screens, but BOTH can be rotated to either portrait or landscape modes. When both are portrait, it resembles a flip phone. When both are landscape, it resembles a small tablet (albeit there's a huge gap where the hinge is). it is the hybrid modes (when one or the other screen is landscape but the other is portrait) that really makes the device. WEIRD.

HTC Status: the Facebook PhoneDo you need a phone dedicated to Facebook updates? Apparently, some people do need such a device. Thus, the HTC Status. Formerly known as the Chacha, and rumored to be developed by Facebook itself (later denied), the phone has a Blackberry / Palm Treo form factor with full keyboard, and a very prominent Facebook button.
Yes, it is an Android phone, running Android 2.3.
Not so good parts: it has a TINY screen, and a relatively slow CPU.
If you need to do mostly Facebook and only occasionally other Android apps, this may not be a bad idea. However, keep in mind it is exclusive to AT in the US thus far.

Lenovo LePhoneLenovo is best known as the Chinese company that bought out IBM's PC and laptop business, though it is a huge electronics maker in its own right. When it decided it wants to join in the Android phone market back in 2010, the phone was VERY interesting. at least visually. A sleek rounded exterior and some VERY customized Android interface. plus this "keyboard" with a VERY weird circular design, that is also a carrying case (with battery) that turns phone into a palmtop.
The specs are no slouch even a year after its release: 3.7 inch 800x480 screen, 1 GHz CPU, 3 MP back camera and VGA front camera.
Unfortunately, it seems that the phone's too Chinese to be exported to US market. You can find it on eBay, but no carrier in the US sells it.

This theme park simulation game operates on the same premise as the other games: create your own theme park, attract guests and try to turn a profit. Rotating objects and maps in "Roller Coaster Tycoon 3" is a simple task, but unfortunately, it isn't very intuitive. Rotating in Roller Coaster Tycoon 3 is a necessary operational task when playing the game; players need to know how to do this in order to see all areas of the park, as well as properly design the park.
To rotate the aerial map in Roller Coaster Tycoon 3.
First, load the game by double clicking on the Roller Coaster Tycoon icon. When the game loads, select "Load Game" or click "Select New Game" to start a fresh game. There are lots of simulation games out there. Kids may hear about a game from other kids and ask for it. Parents, be sure to check the rating on the game and read reviews to understand the content. The simulation games listed are good for older kids (about 10 to 12), although many (if not most) of the games listed adults and teens will enjoy. I certainly do!
1. "Fish Tycoon"Screenshot Last Day of Work.
"Fish Tycoon" gives you the goal of finding the 7 magic fish of Isola. You breed the fish, buy supplies, and sell the fish in a fish store. You start off with just a few fish and work you way to two tank fulls. "Zoo Tycoon 2: Zookeeper's Collection"Box Cover Microsoft.
"Zoo Tycoon 2" is a great game for children, but it is fun, but also teaches about the animals. Gamers have to create an individual environment for each animal, so knowledge of the animal's natural habitat has to be known or searched out using the knowledge files within the game. "RollerCoaster Tycoon 3" is the long leader and most popular choice when it comes to rollercoaster and theme park games. You'll ride the coasters, customize the food stalls and shops, create your own family of visitors, and build water slides and rollercoasters. The Platinum version includes the "Soaked" and "Wild" expansion packs.
4. "SimCity 4"The object is to build a thriving city. "Real Lives""Real Lives" will teach kids about how people in other countries live by having them pretend they are a person living in one of 190 countries. The player takes on the role of the simulated person from a baby to an adult, by making choices about their social life, living arrangements, and education. "Real Lives" will open kid's eyes to how people live in other countries. You won't find "Real Lives" on the store shelves. "Lemonade Tycoon 2"The objective is to run a succesful lemonade stand in New York City. The gamer is responsible for setting the recipe, prices, and buying accessories to make the lemonade making process faster and keep the customers happy

The magic of mobile games is that they can be played anywhere, but it turns out that quite a lot of us are more than happy to play them when not on the move, according to a new survey from mobile entertainment portal MocoSpace. consumers, the company found that 96 percent of them said that they play mobile games at home at least once a day, and among those, 53 percent said they played them in bed with more than 52 percent playing for over one hour per day and 32 percent playing for more than three hours per day.
The findings reinforce data out released earlier this week on mobile gaming from mobile content company Miniclip, which found that 44 percent of people surveyed for the report said that they mostly played mobile games at home. And MocoSpace notes, too, that EA Mobile has also found that mobile games are played at home 47 percent of the time.
But before you go thinking that this is a sign that mobile gaming isn so mobile after all, it turns out that MocoSpace survey revealed a number of other locations that received similarly high (but not as high) responses: 83 percent said they played mobile games while waiting for an appointment and 72 percent while commuting.
A lot also seem to play them when they should be doing something else: work and with friends both picked up 64 percent of mobile game play; and 46 percent said they played while in class. Some 10 percent of respondents said they played at work for over an hour every day.
While bed was the most popular location for playing a mobile game at home, 41 percent said living room. (Bathrooms, it turns out, are not very popular for mobile games: only five percent said they played there; ditto the dining table at one percent.)
And in keeping with the runaway success of Draw Something, social games scored as the most popular in mobile, with 62 percent opting for these over action, puzzle or gambling games.
What to make of these results? A lot of the most popular mobile games up to now have been casual games and those that can be played in short bursts like Draw Something but also Angry Birds and the rest.
But if most of the gaming is taking place over at least an hour of time, and in stationary (sometimes very stationary) locations, there is probably scope for the development of more timebased and involved games, the kind that have been traditionally associated with gaming consoles and fill that niche in the market.

Interivew with Jay Tummelson
At 54, Jay Tummelson has a job many of us might envy he travels the world, mainly Europe, scouting for the best board games being designed. Then his company, Rio Grande Games, publishes those games for the English speaking world and he gets to do it all over again. and elsewhere.
His timing couldn't have been better. In early 1998, when he formed Rio Grande Games, the Internet was taking off as a new mass outlet for news and information. The Net has made it much easier for people to share information and discover new ways to spend their entertainment dollars.
At the same time, the extraordinary amount of technology we face on a daily basis has made it more appealing for many people to take a look at how they can get away from the computer and spend more time with family and friends. After spending all day on a computer at work, people could be less likely to want to come home and stare at yet another 17 inch (or, worse, 14 inch!) screen.
Enter a sort of board game revival, which some theorize is already underway and will continue into the forseeable future. And German style games many created specifically as family games are so well designed that many people who "discover" them wonder why they didn't know about them before.
No doubt that description includes an over simplification or two, but it is true to say that Tummelson makes his living as an independent businessman in the board game industry, and he's having fun doing it. He's also receiving quite a bit of significant recognition. by Rio Grande, was named Game of the Year by Games magazine. After playing this game myself, it's not hard to imagine why the folks at Games were so enamored with Torres.
But even more impressive than that single accolade is the fact that the 2000 Games 100 list included more than 15 Rio Grande releases.
Tummelson took some time to answer a few questions about Rio Grande and his interest in board gaming. Since some readers may be unfamiliar with Rio Grande's games, we'll start with Tummelson's comments on four of his most recent success stories.
Please tell us a little about these four games:
Torres, 2000 Games 100 Game of the Year
I saw the game as a sample last Christmas (1998). I liked the game, but was told it would not be produced for several months. When the time came, I was ready and jumped at the chance to do the English version. Torres is a game of tower building. With each player having just 5 action points to spend each round, the game moves quickly and is filled with difficult decisions.
Tikal, 2000 Games 100 Best Family Strategy Game
I saw this game at the same time as Torres, but it was scheduled for earlier printing. As I had not worked with Ravensburger before, I had to make some new contacts. Fortunately, this went quickly and well. We met in N [Germany, at a game fair] last February and agreed for me to publish the English version.
In Tikal, the players are exploring the ancient Mayan ruins. They build the board as the game progresses and they discover the various parts of Tikal. This too is a game of difficult decisions that changes every time you play.
Ricochet Robot, 2000 Games 100 Best Puzzle Game
I first saw Ricochet Robot as a prototype last year when I visited Han im Gl I was immediately impressed with the game, but thought it had a few problems (as did the folks at Hans im Gl We discussed possible solutions and I agreed then to do the game, being certain the problems would be resolved (and they were!). It was shown at N and released shortly thereafter.
In Ricochet Robot, the players work separately to solve a series of puzzle. In each puzzle, the goal is to move a particular robot to a specified spot on the board. The player who finds the shortest route, wins a chip and the players with the most chips, wins the game.
Mamma Mia, 2000 Games 100 Best Memory Game
I saw this game when I visited Abacus Spiele in the summer of 1998. It had a different theme, but I liked the game play. Later, they decided on the Pizza theme and we agreed to co publish the game.
In Mamma Mia! players try to fill eight pizza orders. Each player has eight orders to fill and a hand full of ingredients. Players discard ingredient cards and, sometimes, pizza orders to a common stack, where they hope to fill those orders later in the game.
When did you start playing boardgames?
As a child, first with my parents and sister and later with school friends.
What were some of your earliest favorite games?
Chess and card games (gin and canasta) were my favorites. Of course, I played Monopoly, but found it boring and too luck driven for my taste. I tried other board games that I found more interesting: Risk and backgammon come to mind, but it was chess and the card games that really interested me and that I spent most of my time with before I went to college.
When did you become interested in German/European games?
When I was working for Mayfair Games (from 1995 to 1997). Darwin Bromley had begun to import German games, but they were very expensive ($70 or so) and did not sell well. I felt we needed to publish English versions and at a cheaper price in order for us to bring these games into the US. Thus, in the summer of 1996, we published Detroit/Cleveland Grand Prix, Manhattan, Modern Art, Streetcar, and The Settlers of Catan as our first English versions of German games.
Why do you enjoy German/European games?
The games are short, usually less than an hour and rarely longer than 90 minutes. They have short rules, but strategies that are difficult to master. Thus, they have very high replayability. Although I enjoy games such as Civilization, its length makes it a difficult game to find time for.

Spring brings out the best in us and is the "best" season, possibly because it usually follows a long dreary winter. I am sharing some of my ideas for getting the most out of spring and to enjoy every day of it in some way.
Visit an elderly relative and help her start a small vegetable and flower garden. Have her browse thru some of the great nursery catalogs to pick out things she would like to see growing in her yard.
Re fresh your favorite room with a fresh coat of sunny yellow paint. Add a white vase with white silk flowers. Plan to grow those same flowers in your yard and by mid summer you can replace the silk ones with the real ones.
Have a girl friend's get together at a friends house. Make a gallon of ice tea and play a card game on the patio. Try a game of Phase 10. You will have hours of silly fun.
Bring out the barbecue grill and make burgers for everyone. Don't put it away, you are ready to kick off a season of outdoor cookouts.
Setup the radio out on the back deck and tune in to a great music station. Start your backyard cleanup while listening to great music. Listen to the radio rather than CD or IPOD, you might hear some new music or an old song that evokes memories
