Interivew with Jay Tummelson
At 54, Jay Tummelson has a job many of us might envy he travels the world, mainly Europe, scouting for the best board games being designed. Then his company, Rio Grande Games, publishes those games for the English speaking world and he gets to do it all over again. and elsewhere.
His timing couldn't have been better. In early 1998, when he formed Rio Grande Games, the Internet was taking off as a new mass outlet for news and information. The Net has made it much easier for people to share information and discover new ways to spend their entertainment dollars.
At the same time, the extraordinary amount of technology we face on a daily basis has made it more appealing for many people to take a look at how they can get away from the computer and spend more time with family and friends. After spending all day on a computer at work, people could be less likely to want to come home and stare at yet another 17 inch (or, worse, 14 inch!) screen.
Enter a sort of board game revival, which some theorize is already underway and will continue into the forseeable future. And German style games many created specifically as family games are so well designed that many people who "discover" them wonder why they didn't know about them before.
No doubt that description includes an over simplification or two, but it is true to say that Tummelson makes his living as an independent businessman in the board game industry, and he's having fun doing it. He's also receiving quite a bit of significant recognition. by Rio Grande, was named Game of the Year by Games magazine. After playing this game myself, it's not hard to imagine why the folks at Games were so enamored with Torres.
But even more impressive than that single accolade is the fact that the 2000 Games 100 list included more than 15 Rio Grande releases.
Tummelson took some time to answer a few questions about Rio Grande and his interest in board gaming. Since some readers may be unfamiliar with Rio Grande's games, we'll start with Tummelson's comments on four of his most recent success stories.
Please tell us a little about these four games:
Torres, 2000 Games 100 Game of the Year
I saw the game as a sample last Christmas (1998). I liked the game, but was told it would not be produced for several months. When the time came, I was ready and jumped at the chance to do the English version. Torres is a game of tower building. With each player having just 5 action points to spend each round, the game moves quickly and is filled with difficult decisions.
Tikal, 2000 Games 100 Best Family Strategy Game
I saw this game at the same time as Torres, but it was scheduled for earlier printing. As I had not worked with Ravensburger before, I had to make some new contacts. Fortunately, this went quickly and well. We met in N [Germany, at a game fair] last February and agreed for me to publish the English version.
In Tikal, the players are exploring the ancient Mayan ruins. They build the board as the game progresses and they discover the various parts of Tikal. This too is a game of difficult decisions that changes every time you play.
Ricochet Robot, 2000 Games 100 Best Puzzle Game
I first saw Ricochet Robot as a prototype last year when I visited Han im Gl I was immediately impressed with the game, but thought it had a few problems (as did the folks at Hans im Gl We discussed possible solutions and I agreed then to do the game, being certain the problems would be resolved (and they were!). It was shown at N and released shortly thereafter.
In Ricochet Robot, the players work separately to solve a series of puzzle. In each puzzle, the goal is to move a particular robot to a specified spot on the board. The player who finds the shortest route, wins a chip and the players with the most chips, wins the game.
Mamma Mia, 2000 Games 100 Best Memory Game
I saw this game when I visited Abacus Spiele in the summer of 1998. It had a different theme, but I liked the game play. Later, they decided on the Pizza theme and we agreed to co publish the game.
In Mamma Mia! players try to fill eight pizza orders. Each player has eight orders to fill and a hand full of ingredients. Players discard ingredient cards and, sometimes, pizza orders to a common stack, where they hope to fill those orders later in the game.
When did you start playing boardgames?
As a child, first with my parents and sister and later with school friends.
What were some of your earliest favorite games?
Chess and card games (gin and canasta) were my favorites. Of course, I played Monopoly, but found it boring and too luck driven for my taste. I tried other board games that I found more interesting: Risk and backgammon come to mind, but it was chess and the card games that really interested me and that I spent most of my time with before I went to college.
When did you become interested in German/European games?
When I was working for Mayfair Games (from 1995 to 1997). Darwin Bromley had begun to import German games, but they were very expensive ($70 or so) and did not sell well. I felt we needed to publish English versions and at a cheaper price in order for us to bring these games into the US. Thus, in the summer of 1996, we published Detroit/Cleveland Grand Prix, Manhattan, Modern Art, Streetcar, and The Settlers of Catan as our first English versions of German games.
Why do you enjoy German/European games?
The games are short, usually less than an hour and rarely longer than 90 minutes. They have short rules, but strategies that are difficult to master. Thus, they have very high replayability. Although I enjoy games such as Civilization, its length makes it a difficult game to find time for.

The Rivals for Catan
The Rivals for Catan
Here's a way to get that Settlers of Catan feel but in a form playable with two players. The Rivals for Catan is a revamp (and improvement) of the Catan Card Game, maintaining the gameplay but removing some of the frustrations and adding a few new elements. Players still roll dice to gather resources, but action cards are now easier to play and less brutal.
Vital StatsPlayers: 2
Components: 2 large wooden dice (event and production), 2 wooden tokens (trade and strength), and 180 square cards (including starting layouts for both players, settlements, roads, cities, resource regions, event cards, building and action cards, and 3 different theme decks). The dice are very nice, and while square cards may frustratingly always seem in the wrong direction, the resource region mechanic makes the square cards very useful.
Gameplay SummaryEach player gets a starting layout with two settlements connected by a road, and six resource regions on the corners of the settlements, one for each resource type and die number. You start with a hand of three cards.
On your turn, you roll the dice. First, the event die happens, which may flip an event card or otherwise effect your resources. Then, the production die happens, and you produce one resource on each field matching that number.
After production, you may play action cards from your hand and build things. Some action cards especially the nastier ones have pre requisites that prevent you from playing them too early in the game.
Settlements, roads, and cities are in the center and can be built by either player. A road must be built for each additional settlement you build. New settlements come into play with two new resource regions, increasing your production. And cities give you an extra point and allow the creation of special city only buildings.
Players may also build cards from their hand, ranging from expensive city additions for extra points, to inexpensive trade fleets that allow better resource conversion rates, to vikings that give you a strength advantage over the other player to gain event benefits.
At the end of your turn, you draw your hand back up to three cards, and then may discard one card from your hand to replace it with a new one from the same color deck.
The first player to achieve 12 victory points wins.

The Good And BadGood Stuff
Rivals for Catan is a great game for couples, keeping the dice rolling production, the conversion of resources, and much of the same feel of Settlers of Catan but playable with two. Setup doesn't take too long, and open ended trading has been removed, making it a slightly faster alternative.
Rivals has been well balanced to make it unlikely for one player to fall frustratingly too far behind. You get at least one resource on every die roll, even if it's not the one you want. The attack cards have pre requisites, and even then, have been toned down from the original Catan Card Game so as not to destroy a player's best building with no recourse. There are even some clever new buildings, like the Marketplace, which give you a free resource on any roll where your opponent would produce on more regions than you. In short, the game has been re balanced to have less direct conflict and prevent runaway leaders.
Rivals comes with three themed decks of cards, each of which has a very definite feel. The Era of Gold game is focused on trade and production, perfect for those who want a "friendly" game. The Era of Turmoil, conversely, is filled with attack cards, and events that punish players based on who has more strength. The ability to choose which deck to use in any given game (or all three) is a very nice perk.
Building stuff is fun. This may seem obvious to some, but there is something inherently compelling about gathering resources and using them to slowly expand your empire and grow your gathering and expending powers.
Bad StuffLuck plays a non trivial role in this game, and some may be frustrated with repeated die rolls that help your opponent and not you, or a handful of unplayable cards while your opponents draw tons of helpful actions. Things may tend to even out over the course of a game, but it sure feels unfair when your hand is useless cards and your opponent keeps getting free resources.
If you are so foolish as to fill your hand with cards from the theme stack, you can never draw a regular card again until you manage to successfully play one of the cards in your hand. The obvious solution is "Don't do that", but it still seems unpleasant.
In the expert variant with all three theme decks included, most cards in the theme decks rely on a card of which there is only one copy. Whichever player manages to build one of these buildings makes many of the cards in that deck useless for the other player, which seems odd given how balanced the rest of the game has been made.
Some may feel that the game has become too balanced, and dislike the lack of ability to open up a lead on your opponent and smash them mercilessly.
Conclusion: Rivals for Catan is a solid 2 player game. A longer playtime than you might expect from the small box, but a nice mix of luck and strategy, and plenty of balance to make it a good "couples" game.

Based on the hit Japanese comic book and cartoon series, Yugioh trading cards have become a hit with youngsters everywhere. Yugioh enthusiasts worldwide collect the wildly popular Yugioh trading cards in order to participate in the elaborate game that is based on the trading cards. If you're curious about the Yugioh phenomenon, and would like to learn the basic rules and strategies of the Yugioh trading card game, here is a helpful Yugioh primer.
The basic object of the Yugioh trading card game is to become a master duelist by winning a series of matches against your opponent. To play, two or more players must have a basic set of game cards, a game mat, and a copy of the official rulebook. Each match consists of three duels. The first player who wins two duels, or has one win and two draws, is considered the winner of the match.
Each player must begin with a minimum of 40 cards, known as the Dueling Deck. In addition to the Dueling Deck, players may also play with a Side Deck. Players use their Side Deck in order to modify and improve their primary Dueling Deck. The Side Deck must contain exactly 15 cards. Cards from the Side Deck can be exchanged for cards in the Dueling Deck, as long as the number of cards in the Dueling Deck remains the same.
At the beginning of a duel, each player begins with 8,000 Life Points. A player's Life Points are gradually reduced according to damage incurred during battle. The first player whose points are reduced to zero Life Points loses the battle. If by chance both players are reduced to zero Life Points, the battle is declared a draw.
There are three basic types of cards used to play the Yugioh Trading Card game. These include: Monster cards, Spell cards, and Trap cards. Monster cards are classified as 'attack' cards. They allow you to launch an attack against your opponent. There are numerous types of Monster cards, including Fusion Monster cards and Ritual Monster cards. Each type of monster card has a different effect, and may work in combination with each other to launch a specific attack.
Spell cards allow you to put a spell on your opponent. Once the spell has been activated, normal Spell cards can no longer be used. Other types of Spell cards include Continuous Spell cards, Field Spell cards, and Equip Spell cards.
Trap cards are color coded purple cards that are used to trap your opponent. Different types of Trap cards have different effects. The most common types of Trap cards are Normal Trap cards, Counter Trap cards, and Continuous Trap cards.
Every Yugioh card that is in play or has been discarded is placed on the Yugioh game mat. The game mat is divided into different fields where specific cards can be played. For instance, there is a Spell and Trap zone where these cards can be played. Using the information printed on each card, players battle against one another. Whoever incurs the least damage during battle is deemed the winner.

How to Maximize the Spring Season
How to Maximize the Spring Season
Spring is in the air and all around us there is a renewing of life and a promise of beauty on the earth in flowers and in us by the renewing of our spirit. Spring brings out the best in us and is the "best" season, possibly because it usually follows a long dreary winter. I am sharing some of my ideas for getting the most out of spring and to enjoy every day of it in some way.
Visit an elderly relative and help her start a small vegetable and flower garden. Have her browse thru some of the great nursery catalogs to pick out things she would like to see growing in her yard.
Re fresh your favorite room with a fresh coat of sunny yellow paint. Add a white vase with white silk flowers. Plan to grow those same flowers in your yard and by mid summer you can replace the silk ones with the real ones.
Have a girl friend's get together at a friends house. Make a gallon of ice tea and play a card game on the patio. Try a game of Phase 10. You will have hours of silly fun.
Bring out the barbecue grill and make burgers for everyone. Don't put it away, you are ready to kick off a season of outdoor cookouts.
Setup the radio out on the back deck and tune in to a great music station. Start your backyard cleanup while listening to great music. Listen to the radio rather than CD or IPOD, you might hear some new music or an old song that evokes memories
Clean out your closet, get rid of the clutter. Try on those shorts to see what still fits. Take all clothes that you haven't worn in a while or doesn't fit and donate to your local homeless shelter or have a clothes swap with friends. Plan to treat yourself to new tops to refresh the old summer shorts and skirts. Make a shopping list of the colors of tops that would coordinate well with the skirts and shorts you have in your wardrobe. A few crisp white top will give you maximum value.

We looked into it and discovered that this game could be a real gem. A simple card game with a small board (almost surplus to requirements), it is an elegant 2 player card strategy game that has elements of bluffing with set collection and more. Fast playing, it is a great little game for a night in for just two.

The card gained may be from the top of a discard pile on the board or from the top of the deck.
So far this is very easy. Now for the two twists.
Any card you play into your tableau (the tableau area for each player is their side of the board) is now a set you are collecting. Cards must be played in increasing numerical order only. To score positively at the games end the set needs to total 21+, 20 will break even and under 20 scores negative points.
The card you pick up is either from the top of any discard pile on the board or from the deck. Drawing from the discard gives away what you are after early in the game, while later on it slows down the finish allowing you more time to play out of your hand. Drawing from the deck hides what you are after, yet it shortens the length of the game and how long you have to play out of your hand.
The 60 cards are made up of 5 colour suits, each suit has 12 cards numbered 2 10 plus 3 multiplier cards. The Multilier cards are there to increse the score, either posative improvement if the played suit scores over 20pts, or negatively if under 20 pts.
To play cards into your tableau, you must place cards inascendingorder, the multiplier cards count as so to use these they must be placed before numbered cards. A numbered card can not be played if a smaller denomination than the last played card of that suit, so initially you don want to over commit and play lots of bigger cards as you will not be able to play smaller ones. This is a very simple game, yet it really is one of the great 2 player games out there. It is portable and can be played almost anywhere as the board is not essential.
What is in the Box?
The game is based around a set of 60 large playing cards in 5 colour suits. There is also a small fold out board and a small rule set.
To actually play the game you can do so without the board, this makes it very portable and easy to setup almost anywhere. is quick and easy. Shuffle all the cards, deal 8 to each player and place the remainder face down beside the board in easy reach.
Playing the Game
The basic play of this game is very simple, you must first play a card out of your hand, then, you may collect a card to return your hand to 8 cards.
Cards may be played either into your tabeau as a set you are collecting or into a discard pile for that suit/colour as denoted by the board.
The card gained may be from the top of a discard pile on the board or from the top of the deck.
So far this is very easy. Now for the two twists.
Any card you play into your tableau (the tableau area for each player is their side of the board) is now a set you are collecting. Cards must be played in increasing numerical order only. To score positively at the games end the set needs to total 21+, 20 will break even and under 20 scores negative points.
The card you pick up is either from the top of any discard pile on the board or from the deck. Drawing from the discard gives away what you are after early in the game, while later on it slows down the finish allowing you more time to play out of your hand. Drawing from the deck hides what you are after, yet it shortens the length of the game and how long you have to play out of your hand.
The 60 cards are made up of 5 colour suits, each suit has 12 cards numbered 2 10 plus 3 multiplier cards. The Multilier cards are there to increse the score, either posative improvement if the played suit scores over 20pts, or negatively if under 20 pts.
To play cards into your tableau, you must place cards inascendingorder, the multiplier cards count as so to use these they must be placed before numbered cards. A numbered card can not be played if a smaller denomination than the last played card of that suit, so initially you don want to over commit and play lots of bigger cards as you will not be able to play smaller ones. Multipliers really commit you to trying to make a suit score 20pts or more as failure will give you a larger negative score. Multiplier cards may be placed on each other up to a maximum of 3.
To understand how it all works lets look at scoring and you will grasp the importance of all of this. At games end each player adds up the score of each of his suits, deducting 20 from each total, the result is the base points scored for that suit which may be positive or negative or zero. Each multiplier that was played into the suit modifies this, one modifier doubles the score, 2 modifier cardstriplesthe score and 3multipliesit by four. This then gives the final score for that suit. Add all the final totals for each suit together to get your score.
This is a game we like to play, and because it is so portable we have been known to take it to cafes and restaurantto play over dinner (between courses). It has great speed, each action the other player makes has an effect on your next turn, you are watching their every move, figuring out what they have and where they are going, and having done that you have to decide to slow things down or speed things up. It is intense. It is quick. It is fun.

We've heard plenty of rumblings regarding Apple's fifthgeneration iPad, which was expected to be unveiled in the coming months. MingChi also wrote that the new iPad will be 25% lighter and 15% thinner than the current fullsize iPad, again supporting an earlier leak that pictured a completely redesigned iPad shell that adopts the iPad mini's design identity.
"We think the tablet will, at 7.58.0mm, be 15% thinner than iPad 4," the analyst wrote in a research note picked up by MacRumors. "The new device will likely be about 500 grams, or some 25% lighter than iPad 4, run on an A7X processor, and sport cameras with similar specs to the iPad 4's (front HD, rear 5MP). The casing shape and color (silver and black) and narrow bezel design will be similar to the iPad mini's."

The iPod touch is a handheld music and media player, game console, and mobile Wi Fi Internet device from Apple that uses the iOS operating system. The iPod touch resembles and is slightly smaller than the iPhone 4S.
Starting at $199, the iPod touch offers a less expensive alternative to the iPhone and iPad, while still providing web access, email, FaceTime video chat (with other iOS devices), camera, video recording, and support for most mobile apps. Further cost savings result from the iPod's not requiring a wireless phone plan.
Like all iOS devices, the iPod touch has built in accessibility features to accommodate persons with disabilities. Examples include the screen reader VoiceOver and Zoom magnification for the blind and visually impaired, captioned iTunes movies for deaf and hard of hearing persons, and an easy press touch screen for those with mobility impairments.
To get started, turn on your iPod touch. Press the round, indented "Home" key found midway along the bottom of the device just above the USB cable port.
You press and hold the Home key to turn off or to restart your iPod.
Press the Home key at any time to return to the Home screen. You can also double click the Home key to cycle among recently used apps.
Follow the onscreen instructions to set up and register your iPod touch. You'll need an Apple ID number and password.
Establishing a Wi Fi Connection
In order to view web pages, download apps, use FaceTime, or send email, your iPod touch must access a Wi Fi network.
To establish a connection, tap the "Settings" icon on the Home screen; tap "Wi Fi," and then select from "Choose a Network."
Tap "Ask to Join Networks" to locate other connections and "Forget a Network" to prevent your iPod from joining a Wi Fi network. Verizon FiOS, you can access a closed Wi Fi network through its router.
To do this, tap "Other" under "Settings" > "Wi Fi" and enter the network name, password, and security type. For FiOS users, this information appears on an identification sticker on the router.
When Wi Fi is available, a blue bar icon appears beside the word "iPod" in the status bar.
Once you join a Wi Fi network, your iPod touch will automatically connect to it whenever it is in range. If more than one network is in range, it joins the one used last.
Once there, tap "Categories" at the top of the screen, or "Search" at the bottom to browse for apps on for anything, from games to social networking and productivity. Many apps are free.
On your first visit, iPod touch will ask if you'd to download its free iBooks app. To do so, click "Yes" and you'll later see the iBooks icon on your home screen.

As enterprise IT departments scramble to meet demand for more mobile applications, many are charting entirely new terrain. Lessons from applications development and support from PCs and notebooks don't necessarily provide a guide for the mobile tier.
Indeed, mobile apps are very different in what end users expect from them. So how to learn new best practices and simultaneously meet the demand for rapid mobile apps development?
Siemens Brazil in S Paulo has learned several valuable lessons from its mobile app development experiments and subsequent full roll out of high demand work flow apps for business managers.
BriefingsDirect had an opportunity to learn first hand how Siemens Brazil has succeeded at its initial mobile apps at the recent HP Discover 2013 Conference in Barcelona when we interviewed Alexandre , IT Consultant and Applications Integration Technician with Siemens Brazil. The discussion is moderated by me, Dana Gardner, Principal Analyst at Interarbor Solutions.

Gardner: Tell us about what Siemens Brazil. Then let's learn about your transition to mobile applications.
: Siemens Brazil is a public utilities engineering company in Brazil, responsible for 50 percent of the energy transmission in Brazil. We're trying to give the managers mobility, the option to make their approval on an ongoing daily basis in a different way.
Real time basisGardner: So it's more important to have workflow approved and managed on a real time basis, wherever these individuals are and whatever device they happen to be using?
: Yes. These are the main points of the solution. We're trying to give this especially to our managers, who are used to being in meetings or moving from one place to another. They gain the ability to make this kind of approval on the go.
Gardner: Why didn't you just make these applications internally, customize them, host them, and deliver them? What was missing from your being able to do this all yourselves?
: In the beginning, we were looking for a tool that gave us the freedom to develop for any device. That's the main reason that we chose HP Anywhere. We have the freedom now to choose or give the freedom to the users to choose the device.
Gardner: Tell us a little bit about that process of adoption. You've had a proof of concept (POC) phase?
: Initially we had a POC with HP Anywhere together with HP Brazil and a local partner. From the beginning, it was well suited. So we decided to go with HP Anywhere in production, and now we're running a project that will cover nearly 200 users by the end of January.
Gardner: Do you think this will lead to more applications and more mobile users? Does this seem to be a larger undertaking with movement toward even more mobility?
: Yes, that's for sure. This will become bigger in Siemens Brazil, because it's a change of the mindset of the users. They will begin to change the way they're thinking about requesting solutions from the IT department. In the future, I believe that we'll have a lot of requirements to develop more such mobile applications.
The standard for Siemens Brazil is based on Android. So we're quite sure that 90 percent of the devices will be running on Android and a small percentage on iOS.
Gardner: As you've gone through this process, are there any lessons learned that you could share for other organizations? What lessons have you learned, or what advice could you offer them?
Small processes: The first one would be to think first about smaller processes. At Siemens Brazil, we're starting with a not so big process. We're using a not so complex one to start. This is a good thing to engage the users and allow them to be comfortable, and furnish proof of use on the solution.
The next one would be to talk a lot with the users, because in our case we have requirements that the user could not think of before. We're learning constantly about what is possible with mobility.
I really advise you to talk with the users and know what they want, because most of the times they don't come up with an idea until they use mobile, because they're only thinking initially of desktop or notebook PCs. So when you give to them freedom with mobility, new ideas come up.

However, the glory days of Bitcoin are over after two massive hackings robbed hundreds of millions of dollars from Bitcoin users in the past week.
Bitcoin digital currency storage site Flexcoin announced on March 3, 2014, that it was shutting down after being hacked and robbed of all coins the day before. Cold storage coins, which are held offline and are not connected to the Bitcoin network, can be returned to Flexcoin users. But if your coins weren't in cold storage, you're out whatever you paid for your Bitcoin currency given that there's no insurance taken out as stated in Flexcoin's terms of service.
The equivalent of somewhere around $600,000 (Bitcoin value fluctuates continuously) were stolen when, according to Flexcoin's March 4, 2014 update, the hacker "successfully exploited a flaw in the code which allows transfers between flexcoin users.
Last week, Mt Gox, which hosted the majority of Bitcoin transactions worldwide, was hacked and the value of the currency dropped to $440. The value had gone over $1,000 just three months ago in November, 2013, however, a month prior the value dropped to $110 after an FBI shut down. The amount stolen from Mt Gox is reported as being $460 million after last week's hacking. Mt Gox has filed for bankruptcy. The only information currently posted on the Mt Gox website is a legal document detailing its bankruptcy filing.

The value had gone over $1,000 just three months ago in November, 2013, however, a month prior the value dropped to $110 after an FBI shut down. The amount stolen from Mt Gox is reported as being $460 million after last week's hacking. Mt Gox has filed for bankruptcy. The only information currently posted on the Mt Gox website is a legal document detailing its bankruptcy filing.
